Wiki Draft

Ostrakavis is an apple seedling described in N. E. Hansen's 1902 bulletin A Study of Northwestern Apples. Hansen gives its parentage as Ostrakoff x Ben Davis. He says it was one of several seedlings from that cross raised at the Iowa Experiment Station about 1888. [S1]

The name was proposed because it suggested the parentage, if the variety proved worth propagating. Hansen also noted that the cross was interesting because two sour apples had produced a sweet apple. [S1]

The fruit is medium size or smaller, conical, and regular. The skin is oily yellow with a faint bronze blush. The cavity is deep and regular, with a slight trace of russet. The basin is wide, very shallow, and minutely wrinkled. The flesh is white and sweet. [S1]

Its season is probably late fall or early winter. The same bulletin's diagnostic list also places Ostrakavis among sweet fleshed, conical apples with an oily surface in a midsummer to early winter section. [S1]

The available source gives no direct hardiness zone or winter survival statement for Ostrakavis. Its northern fruit relevance comes from the bulletin context. Hansen was cataloging apples for the northwestern United States, with attention to hardy and Russian associated material. [S1]

The evidence supports direct parentage from Ostrakoff and Ben Davis. The source does not give later breeding use, descendants, disease notes, tree habit, productivity, or storage duration beyond the probable late fall or early winter season. [S1]
