Wiki Draft

Perkins No. 78 is a numbered apple selection from the Perkins series. N. E. Hansen described it in the 1902 South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station bulletin A Study of Northwestern Apples [S1]. The source groups Perkins No. 78 with Perkins Nos. 32 and 46. F. I. Perkins of Red Wing, Minnesota, raised these selections from Malinda seed [S1].

The fruit was large to very large, regular, roundish oblong, and slightly conic [S1]. Hansen described the skin as polished waxen yellow, almost entirely covered with brilliant dark red and darker crimson splashes and stripes. He called it a showy apple [S1]. The dots were obscure, very small, numerous, and whitish [S1].

The flesh was white and faintly stained near the skin [S1]. It was juicy, tender, sprightly acid, and good [S1]. The entry says it ripened earlier than Wealthy, giving its season by comparison rather than by calendar date [S1].

The source gives detailed internal fruit traits: a narrow, deep, acuminate cavity with stellate russet; a shallow, wrinkled, regular basin; a closed calyx with connivent segments; a half-open clasping core; ovate, roomy cells; a conical tube; median stamens; and twelve plump seeds [S1]. A later classification table also lists Perkins No. 78 among striped apples and repeats the ovate, roomy cells and connivent segments [S1].

No direct cold hardiness zone is given for Perkins No. 78. Its northern fruit history relevance comes from its place in Hansen's northwestern apple bulletin and its origin as a Minnesota Malinda seedling. The packet does not support a precise hardiness claim [S1].

Perkins No. 78 belongs to the cultivated apple group, Malus. The bulletin lists it as one of several Perkins numbered seedlings from Malinda seed [S1]. The source also says about 200 Malinda seedlings were coming into bearing and were first exhibited at the Minnesota State Fair in September 1902. This gives the Perkins selections a specific early twentieth century Minnesota breeding context [S1].
