Romna is a Russian apple in the Romna group of Hansen's 1902 northwestern apple catalog. Hansen lists it as Romna No. 599 and also links it with the name Romenskoe. It is a large, very regular, roundish conical winter apple with white flesh and a mild, pleasant acid or subacid flavor. [S1]
Its recorded origin is Russia. The bulletin also gives an important naming note. The apple grown by A. G. Tuttle of Wisconsin as Romenskoe was to be treated as the true Romna. Earlier use of Romna had been confused with Hibernal. Romna also appears as one of the fourteen official groups defined by the Russian apple nomenclature commission. A separate Hibernal group list marks Romna as spurious there, reflecting the same confusion. [S1]
The fruit is large, smooth, round to conical, and very regular. One description says the skin is green with a faint bronze blush and many large gray dots. Another describes it as dark green with brownish red on the sunny side, covered with grayish bloom and thickly sprinkled with large gray dots. The cavity is acute and deep. The basin is shallow, narrow, and wrinkled. The calyx is closed. The flesh is white, firm to fine grained, and rated good, with a mild, pleasant acid character. [S1]
Romna is a late winter and spring apple. Tuttle reported that it keeps until April or May, but does not become good until April. It is more notable as a storage apple than as an early fresh dessert apple. [S1]
The tree is spreading, irregular, and dwarf. J. Sexton called Romna a fine apple and noted that its tree was spreading and had the largest leaf he had observed. [S1]
No direct hardiness zone is given. Its cold climate context comes from Hansen's northwestern apple study, its Russian origin, and comments by C. G. Patten. Patten considered Romna especially valuable for growing seedlings in the hope of obtaining winter varieties. [S1]
Romna matters partly for its naming history and breeding value. It was treated both as a cultivar and as the name of a defined Russian apple group. The bulletin warns that Romna, Romenskoe, and Hibernal had been confused in circulation. Patten's comment also places it among Russian apples considered useful as breeding material for late keeping winter sorts. [S1]
