Wiki Draft

Joe Trio is a Trio crabapple. Hansen listed it among his international, or three species, apples and described it as a 1936 selection from a cross of baccata cerasifera and Mercer wild crab. [S1] Prairie Canada also credits it to Hansen and gives the same parentage. [S2]

The fruit is small, about 4.5 cm across, or about 1 3/4 by 1 3/8 inches. It is described as oblate, yellow, and striped or mixed with red. [S1] The flesh is acid. [S1]

Joe Trio seems to have been valued more for cooking and storage than for dessert use. Hansen wrote that it makes very good sauce and keeps through the winter. Prairie Canada shortens this to "good keeper" and "sauce." [S1] [S2]

Joe Trio belongs to Hansen's three species crabapple material rather than the standard dessert apple line. The surviving notes suggest it was part of breeding work for hardy, useful crabapple and apple hybrids for the northern Plains. Hansen also wrote that seedlings from such hybrids should give highly interesting results, placing Joe Trio in an experimental lineage as well as a named introduction. [S1]
