Wiki Draft

Waukon is an apple cultivar recorded in prairie fruit literature as a selection of unknown parentage, linked to G. H. Sikes of Moorhead, Minnesota, around 1920.[S1] A 1946 prairie orchard bulletin also listed it among apple varieties worth describing for prairie growers.[S3]

The brief surviving description is suggestive. Edible Apples in Prairie Canada calls Waukon a Wealthy type, but hardier, and says it tolerated heavy clay soil.[S1] This places it in the familiar Wealthy line of northern apples and suggests why it remained worth noting in colder orchard districts.[S1]

Hardiness is described more by where it was recommended than by a modern zone rating. South Dakota Extension listed Waukon as a fall apple for trial in Zone III, defined there as the plains and level prairies of the northern two thirds of the state.[S2] Prairie orchard indexing in the Canadian West points the same way.[S3]

The record is still thin. These sources do not give a fuller account of fruit size, color, flesh, flavor, season, or storage, and they do not explain the hardiness code attached to the prairie entry.[S1]
