Wiki Draft

Malinda is a late keeping apple. The fruit is above medium to large, sharply conical, and somewhat angular. It ripens to rich yellow with a dull red blush. The flesh is yellowish white, firm, juicy, and very mild subacid with a sweet aftertaste. Early South Dakota sources treat it as a winter apple and a notable long keeper. [S2] [S1]

Sources say Malinda originated with Mr. Rollins of Orange County, Vermont. It was named for one of his daughters and was introduced into Minnesota by his son, J. W. Rollins of Elgin, about 1858 or 1860. [S2] The same source says the tree is a slender, straggling grower in the nursery and a tardy bearer, but it bears earlier when top grafted onto Hibernal apple or Virginia crab. [S2]

The South Dakota bulletin describes the fruit as above medium to large, sharply conical, somewhat ribbed, smooth skinned, and marked with minute white dots. [S2] The flesh is yellowish white, firm, juicy, and only fair in quality. Even so, Malinda was valued enough for storage that another bulletin used it as the benchmark for keeping capacity in an ideal hardy apple. [S2] [S2] It is classed as a late winter apple and also appears in a midwinter to spring classification list. [S2]

Malinda's hardiness record is mixed. It is said to have done well in northern Iowa and southern Minnesota, but young trees top grafted on Whitney crab killed back very severely at Brookings in the winter of 1898 to 1899. [S2] Even so, South Dakota recommendation tables placed it in colder prairie recommendation contexts: Zone III in one home fruit table, and for trial or planting in Districts 6, 7, and 8 in another. [S1] [S2]

Its later importance in prairie breeding is substantial. A University of Saskatchewan ancestry study identified Malinda as one of the major founders of advanced cold climate apple selections, contributing 11.8 percent of traced ancestry. [S3] It also appears as the seed parent of Perkins seedlings raised in Minnesota, as part of the seedling background in Frostbite's pedigree, and as a reported parent of Haralson, though Haralson sources disagree on the exact cross. [S2] [S4] [S5]
