Wiki Draft

Moongold is an apricot cultivar bred for northern conditions. Sources identify it as a University of Minnesota introduction from the cross 'Superb' x 'Manchu'. They place its release in 1961, alongside Sungold, as one of two relatively winter hardy apricots from the Minnesota Agricultural Experiment Station Fruit Breeding Farm. [S4] [S5]

Its hardiness is tied directly to Manchurian apricot background. A Minnesota breeding source says the hardiness in Moongold and Sungold came from the hardy Manchurian apricot. South Dakota extension literature referred to Scout and Moongold as apricots of Manitoba suggested for trial. Later South Dakota nursery listings show Moongold was widely offered in the state. This fits its reputation as a northern apricot rather than a tender one. [S3] [S1] [S2]

Prairie index data describe the fruit as medium sized, about 2.5-3.5 in the table measurement column, with creamy apricot skin, a red blush, and light yellow flesh. It is listed as an early apricot and mainly a processing fruit. The packet does not give a fuller eating quality description, but the available evidence places it in the hardy prairie apricot group selected as much for utility as for novelty. [S5]

Later University of Minnesota research used Moongold as apricot germplasm in seed and seedling studies. In that work it is consistently treated as P. armeniaca, with strong germination in some tests and 100% field survival for seedlings at the end of one experiment. Those records are evaluation data, not evidence of Moongold's own parentage, but they show that the cultivar remained important in winter hardy Prunus research long after its introduction. [S4]
