Wiki Draft

Osman is a prairie crabapple from William Saunders' early hardy apple breeding work at the Central Experimental Farm in Ottawa. Sources describe it as a Siberian crab by Osimoe cross, though one index spells the second parent Osinoe. It was one of Saunders' first cross selections, and later sources still listed it as good enough for some commercial use. [S1] [S2] [S3]

Sources place it in 1910 or 1911, and one source says it came from a 1904 cross. [S2] [S3] Osman also appears in early prairie recommendations. A Lethbridge orchard planting listed it among the most frequently recommended introductions, and later prairie notes still called it a good crabapple. [S1] [S2]

The fruit is a small to medium crabapple, about 3.5 cm across or roughly 1 3/4 by 1 1/2 inches. It is roundish oblate and somewhat irregular. It is pale yellow with a crimson wash or markings. The flesh is yellow, crisp, tender, tart, and slightly astringent. Sources place its season in late August or simply summer to medium season. Quality was rated fair for fresh use, but it was valued for processing, especially jelly and canning. [S2] [S3]

Prairie descriptions call the tree a moderate grower, extra hardy, productive, and heavy yielding. Several sources also note a weakness: the fruit may split or check in some seasons, and it can drop badly as it ripens. Osman was sometimes used as a rootstock, though its tendency to split was a drawback. The packet also includes later breeding links involving Osman, but those are descendant uses, not its own parentage. [S2] [S3]
